STAY SAFE
Think about your safety and the safety of emergency responders and public
- What is happening and where?
- Where are the subjects now, or going?
- Confirm the exact location of the subject(s) and the nature of the incident.
- Do not unnecessarily expose yourself to danger.
- How many casualties and/or subject(s) are there?
- How many casualties and/or subject(s) are there?
- Gather relevant intelligence on the subject(s) and related premises or vehicles, potential victims and casualties.
- What weapons are they carrying, what are their actions?
- Is it a firearm or other type of weapon?
- What type of firearm/weapon is it?
- If it is a firearm, is it a handgun or does it have a long barrel?
- Detail is important, for example type and size of knife.
- What is the subject(s) doing with the weapon?
- Have threats been made?
- Information needs to be passed accurately, briefly and clearly to the control room.
- Describe location and subjects.
- Explain type of incident.
- Adopt the M/ETHANE method of reporting.
- Do not approach unnecessarily.
- Use hard cover where available.
- Consider approach and escape routes.
- Consider the safety of others.
- Wear correct PPE.
- Direct and/or disperse the public to safety.
- Gain relevant information from evacuating public.
- Provide real time information and updates.
- Maintain and develop observations.
- Render first aid if safe to do so.
- Where possible, contain/isolate the subject(s) within a location or limit their movement.
- Confront threat only if appropriate, proportionate and achievable.
- Do not endanger your own or colleagues lives in ill-considered attempts at rescue, or to effect an early arrest.
